Abstract

        This case study deals with the role of the elite - academia - in facing the infodemic and tackling rumors that pose a great challenge to societies, especially during epidemics, as  the current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the first infectious disease in recent history in which technology and social media are used on such a large scale for being able to keep people informed, safe, productive, and communicated with each other. Meanwhile, technology is relied upon to express communication and information, which has given rise to an exaggerated infodemic that continues to undermine global response efforts and threaten measures to combat the pandemic (WHO, 2021).
