Necessity of Prostitution in the City of Algiers since the Beginning of French Colonization

Abstract

Thanks to some experiences over time and the serious work of great administrators,prostitution, initially biblical, then hospitable and sacred, had become an unfortunate need but one that must be admitted. This social phenomenon was made legal with rigid regulations. The origin of prostitution in Algiers dates back to the 16th century.Before the arrival of the French, prostitution certainly existed there on a large scale and was regulated. In order to preserve public health, a loyal and protective administration was required. The creation in August 1930 of a health dispensary under the supervision of the police is proof of this.
