Reflections on Israelite Narratives in Books of Tafsir

Abstract

The Isra’iliyyat (narratives of Jewish and Christian origin) are considered extraneous to the field of Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir). This topic is both controversial and significant, as it has led to criticisms and attacks against Islam and Muslims by its adversaries. While the term Isra’iliyyat specifically suggests a Jewish influence on exegesis, referring to the clear impact of Jewish culture on it, the term is also used more broadly. It encompasses both Jewish and Christian influences in tafsir and the impact of these two cultures on Islamic interpretations. The term Isra’iliyyat is commonly used as a general label, with the Jewish element being
dominant due to the prevalence of Jewish sources, the visibility of their traditions, and their frequent interaction with Muslims .
